BMO’s technology is developed in-house and transferrable for usage in different maritime sectors. 

The main technology consists of the VesselBlackBox (VBB) which is an integrated vessel measurement package with its own dedicated online data management and reporting service. Information from various sensors and sources is integrated and combined to deliver the insights you need.


Fully location and context aware measurements: distinguish vessel state (e.g. in transit, docking, at berth) and run specific measurement protocols.

  • Online functionality: check system status and performance at regular intervals, allow for remote monitoring and fault finding.
  • Online data server: storage, consistency checking and processing of incoming data. Fusion of incoming data with external data (e.g. wave buoys and marine control data).
  • Client portal: Publication of data reports, including but not limiting to: daily vessel reports, event alert emails (near misses, out of range parameters), monthly management reports, live vessel statistics and streaming video.

Hardware specification


Measurement System

The VBB provides local data acquisition, storage and communications capabilities. The data acquisition system is a rugged industrial design with up to 1TB solid state disks (SSD) for maximum robustness and reliability. Average power consumption is 30 VA (100 VA peak).


Motion Reference Sensor

BMO uses high-end digital six degrees of freedom motion reference sensors. The sensors are MEMS-based and acquire motion data at a rate of 40Hz (up to 200Hz possible). Each sensor unit contains 3 accelerometers (x, y, z) and 3 gyroscopes (roll, pitch, yaw). The sensors are IP 67 and can handle a maximum impact of 2000G allowing reliable use offshore.


Integrated Internet Connection

Two-way communication with BMO’s IT infrastructure is provided through a mobile broadband connection and/or the vessel's/harbour's WIFI infrastructure.


Power Supply Options

The system requires a continuous power supply from the vessel's DC bus


GPS Receivers

The VBB has its own GPS unit and can connect to the vessel's AIS and navigation units to provide redundancy. GPS measurements are SBAS enabled resulting in sub 2m resolution (depending on atmospheric conditions).


IP video camera

The VBB has an integrated IP video camera plug-in that provides video of transfer activities and access systems on board. Event based camera triggers ensure that all events of interest are captured and stored for the longest possible time.


Optional components


Engine monitoring

When a vessel is equipped with a J1939 compliant engine CAN bus system the VBB can record critical engine parameters in sync with other data sources. This further enhances the understanding of offshore operations.


Virtual sensor

For vessels with larger distances between the sensor location and the location of passenger lounge or of sensitive cargo, BMO has developed a virtual sensor which allows recalculation of measured values to those at any location. This allows for robust and cost effective mapping of larger vessels. The methodology has been verified against various physical sensors such as the high end Ixblue Octans.
